Children's dental care

Prevention, cavity treatment and comfort

At Texas Dental Center in Houston, general dentists provide children's dental care from infancy through adolescence. Whether your child needs a first check-up or treatment for a damaged baby tooth, we explain the findings and recommended options before treatment.

Check-ups, cleanings & prevention

Exams, cleanings, fluoride and sealants help protect growing smiles. Digital X-rays are taken only when needed, with brushing and snack advice for home.

Fillings & baby-tooth crowns

Care for cavities includes fillings and crowns when appropriate. We use tooth-colored NuSmile zirconia crowns for front teeth and durable stainless steel crowns for back teeth.

Extractions & anxious children

Our listed care includes pediatric extractions and infection management. Tell-show-do explanations and nitrous oxide options help us plan treatment around your child's needs.

Early Prevention

When should kids visit? Earlier than you think.

Following AAPD guidelines, we recommend your child's first visit as early as 6 months. To build comfort and monitor development, we recommend routine visits every 3 months for children aged 6 months to 3 years. After age 3, we transition to a standard 6-month preventive schedule. Early visits help us manage infection control and prevent the need for more invasive procedures later.

The NuSmile Difference

Strong where it matters, natural where it shows.

When a child requires a crown for a front (anterior) tooth, we prioritize both health and confidence. We utilize NuSmile Zirconia crowns, which offer a beautiful, natural white appearance—avoiding the "silver" look of traditional metal. For posterior (back) teeth, we use high-durability Stainless Steel Crowns (SSC) to ensure the strength needed for chewing and longevity.

NuSmile Zirconia (Anterior)

Tooth-colored, biocompatible crowns for front teeth — natural look, no metal showing.

Stainless Steel (Posterior)

Durable SSC crowns for back teeth — built to handle the force of chewing for years.

Safe Sedation

A Calm, Fearless Experience

For children requiring fillings, extractions, or those with dental anxiety, we offer safe Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas) sedation. It is non-invasive, fully reversible within minutes, and allows your child to stay relaxed and cooperative throughout their treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pediatric Dentistry: Frequently Asked Questions

Parent-friendly answers about first visits, Medicaid, sedation, NuSmile crowns, and easing dental anxiety.
When should my child see the dentist for the first time?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child's first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth erupting. Early visits help us catch issues early, build positive associations with the dentist, and give you tailored guidance on brushing, fluoride, and diet.
Do you accept Medicaid, CHIP, DentaQuest, and MCNA?
Yes. Texas Dental Center accepts Medicaid, CHIP, DentaQuest, and MCNA for pediatric patients. These plans pay for covered children's services such as cleanings, exams, X-rays, fillings, sealants and crowns; we'll confirm what your child's plan covers, and anything it doesn't, before treatment. Please note we do not participate in Pediatric HMO plans at this time.
Is nitrous oxide (laughing gas) safe for children?
Yes. Nitrous oxide has been safely used in pediatric dentistry for decades. It's a mild sedative that helps anxious children stay relaxed and comfortable during treatment. Effects wear off within minutes after the mask is removed, so your child can return to school or normal activities the same day. We carefully monitor every child throughout the procedure.
What are NuSmile crowns and why use them on baby teeth?
NuSmile zirconia crowns are tooth-colored, biocompatible crowns designed specifically for primary (baby) teeth. They protect a damaged or decayed baby tooth until it naturally falls out, look completely natural compared to traditional silver crowns, and help preserve space for the permanent tooth coming in.
How can I help my child feel less anxious about the dentist?
Use positive language at home (avoid words like 'shot' or 'pain'), read kid-friendly dentist books together, and let them bring a favorite toy. Our team uses tell-show-do techniques, kid-friendly explanations, and gentle communication to make every visit feel like an adventure rather than a procedure.
How often should children have dental cleanings?
Most children should have a professional cleaning, exam, and fluoride treatment every six months starting at age 1. Children with a history of cavities, orthodontic appliances, or special healthcare needs may benefit from visits every 3–4 months. We tailor the schedule to each child's individual risk level.
